Visit London for a Special Occasion

Filed under: London, London Events — Tags: Visit London — admin @ 2:12 pm

Do you or your partner have a special anniversary coming up?  Maybe it is a big “O” birthday, or a wedding anniversary, and you want to make it one to remember – something special for you both.  What could be more memorable then a couple of days in London, taking in one of the wonderful shows that London has to offer, a gourmet meal at one of the finest restaurants, and  ending up in a comfortable room at one of the budget hotels.

If you have not seen “The Phantom of the Opera”, which has been running for 24-years at Her Majesty’s Theatre, ten you will be in for a big treat.  It is a romantic musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber based on a gothic novel of life beneath the stage of the Paris Opera House.  If you have been lucky enough to have seen it, then you will enjoy the continuation of the story, also by Andrew Lloyd Webber, “Love Never Dies” showing at the Adelphi Theatre.

Another favourite is “Billy Elliot, which has been running for 5-years at the Victoria Palace Theatre.  Most people are familiar with the story of the northern boy from a rough and tough area who, like his peers, was expected to become a miner, but won a place at the Royal Ballet School.  The dancing is quite spectacular.  If you would like an ultra spectacular evening, then “The Lion King” would really appeal to you.  It is still as popular as ever after 11-years,  and is on at the Lyceum Theatre, and is an adaptation of Disney’s hugely successful; animated film.

For nostalgia, “Grease” is showing at the Piccadilly Theatre, and “Mamma Mia” is showing at the Prince of Wales Theatre.  Both are packed with songs and music that will haunt you for days after.

However, the fastest selling West End show of all times is “Oliver”, showing at Drury Lane, Theatre Royal.  A wonderfully spectacular and memorable show.

There are numerous other shows on in London, and whatever your taste, you are sure to find something to suit. “Blood Brothers” has been running for 19-years at the Phoenix Theatre.  It is an award winning tale of Liverpudlian twins separated at birth.   Once you have seen it, you will agree that it deserves an award.

After a visit to a theatre, what could be nicer then enjoying a meal at one of London’s Restaurants.  Whatever you taste is in food, you will have no difficulty finding the perfect restaurant.

Finally to end your memorable day, what could be nicer then relaxing in one of London’s Hotels.  Kensington West offer first class service at affordable prices.  Not only would your anniversary be one you will never forget, you may find yourself wanting to repeat the experience next year!

Historical Westminister

Filed under: London, Westminister — Tags: Historical Westminister — admin @ 2:20 pm

Every time we switch the television on to watch the news, we are more often then not looking at the Houses of Parliament in the background. Westminster is famous for its architecture, and the history that surrounds it.

Take Westminster Abbey, for example. It stands on the site of an old church and Benedictine foundation of the 7th century. It was rebuilt under Edward the Confessor, then again by Henry III. Important additions were made by Edward II, Edward III, Richard II, Richard III and Henry VII. Henry VII was responsible for erecting the beautiful eastern chapel in the perpendicular style which bears his name. The western tower and the front was rebuilt by Wren in the 18th century. The Abbey contains many tombs of sovereigns, the unknown warrior and many other illustrious men are commemorated by monuments.

Written by Carolyn Clayton

Close by, is Westminster Cathedral, the seat of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westminster. It was designed by J.F. Bentley, and built between 1895 and 1910. It is of red brick and built in the early Byzantine style with a domed campanile, 282 feet high. The interior is highly decorative and very ornate.

Westminster Hall, adjoining the Houses of Parliament, was originally built as a banqueting hall by William Rufus, and many courtly festivals were held there in succeeding centuries. King John established the Law Courts there. It now forms a gigantic hallway leading to the Houses of Parliament. Charles I, Sir Thomas More and Warren Hastings were tried there.

The Houses of Parliament also have a long history. It is the name given to the supreme legislature of the United Kingdom. It consists of the Queen, the House of Lords (the upper or second chamber) and the House of Commons. Over the years the balance of the three parts of the legislature has changed, such that the Queen’s role is now only formal. The architecture and the history of Westminster is of interest world-wide, and for anyone who has only seen it fleetingly on the television, it is well worth visiting. Not only is it educational, but it can be awe inspiring and extremely enjoyable. Fortunately, there are many budget hotels not far away, offering good value for money and excellent service. One day is just not enough to take in all the sights and history of Westminster. Is it any wonder that it is one of the most popular tourist destinations for our overseas visitors. London has links to most parts of the country, making it easy for us to spend a couple of days improving our knowledge.

Budget London Hotels Are Not Impossible To Find If You Know Where To Look

Filed under: Kensington, Kensington hotels, London, London Hotels — Tags: budget london hotels — admin @ 2:18 pm

Travel abroad does not have to be expensive if you know the right places to stay and how to save money. There are numerous budget London hotels that can save you money and still provide quality accommodations. The list of options below should help you locate something that you like.

When traveling anywhere it is always a good idea to get a good feel for the are you intend to visit ahead of time and determine where you intend to spend most of your time. You will also want to consider how close to the attractions you want to be. In the case of traveling to London it is a good idea to decide what neighborhood you want to stay I and then try to find budget London hotels in that area.

Keep in mind that some areas will be more residential than others and that you may be able to save money by staying a little out of the high cost district. One area that is predominantly residential is the neighborhood of Bayswater. This neighborhood is just north of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, which makes it a great location.

Baywatch has numerous inexpensive accommodations well within a reasonable distance to the park and gardens. Not only is this close to the main attractions of the city but it is also a quiet area, which makes it a great destination when travailing with children.

One such place is the Central Park Hotel; this hotel is located on Queensborough terrace, which is a strip just north of Kensington square. While this hotel is not a historic building it does offer reasonable rates on its rooms, which are all en-suite. This place has over 25 rooms and tends to be offering reasonable rates even during the busiest travel times.

If you are looking to stay in Victorian era hotel and still save money then you should consider the Queen’s park Hotel. This facility is housed in a large Victorian era structure and is also located in Queensburough terrace. This place will provide you a Victorian experience at a budget, but it is not going to provide you luxury or grandeur. However if you are more interested in a good night’s sleep than if there is a fancy chandelier in the lobby then you should feel right at home here.

Kensington is perhaps one of the most popular areas of the city it is also one of the most affluent areas. Although this is the home to Kensington palace the former home of Princess Diana it is not impossible to find an affordable hotel nearby.
