Hotels near Harrods

June 7, 2011

Are you planning on visiting the famous department store Harrods in London this summer? Are you looking for one of the Hotels near Harrods? Kensington West is in a great location for all of what London has to offer, come and stay with us and have plenty of money in your pocket to spend in Harrods.

Harrods is one of the world’s most famous and largest department stores. The store located in Brompton Road in Knightsbridge attracts an astonishing 15 million visitors every year. It sells things from luxury to normal everyday items which are spread across a whopping 90,000 square feet. In May of 2010 its then owner Mohammed Al Fayed sold the store for a cool £1.5bn to the Qatari royal family.

History
Originally the store was established in 1849 by Charles Henry Harrod, which is where the name comes from. It started off in a single room and employed just two assistants and a messenger boy. At that time it mainly just sold tea and groceries. In 1861 the store underwent a transformation when it was taken over by Harrod’s son, Charles Digby Harrod. Over the next 30 years the store expanded into the busy successful department store it still is today. Clothes, perfumes and medicine were added to the store which soon attracted wealthy customers. By 1880 the store had acquired the adjoining buildings and employed one hundred people by.

However in 1883 a fire destroyed the store which could have meant the end of Harrods but the owners rebuilt the store into what it is today. The fire could have been the end for the store but Charles was undeterred and sent letters to all his customers telling them their orders were delayed due to the fire but would be sent out as soon as possible. He actually made a record profit that year. The store was rebuilt on a much grander scale with the help of architect Charles William Stephens.

In the November of 1898 it featured one of the world’s first escalators. Because this was such a new radical way of getting from floor to floor Charles offered his nervous customers brandy at the top of the escalators to revive them after their ‘ordeal’ at it were

The now famous department store was bought by the Fayed brothers in 1985. The IRA bombed Harrods twice, the first was a car bomb which exploded in 1983 and killed six people and 75 injured. The second bomb was placed in a rubbish bin outside the building which injured four people in 1993.

When Al Fayed’s son died in the same car crash that killed Diana, Princess of Wales, Mr Al Fayed created a memorial to the couple in the Harrods store.

To this very day Harrods attracts millions of visitors each year. If you fancy visiting the store be warned that the store have has very strict rules on dress. If your wearing jeans, shorts or leggings the porters – known as the ‘Green Men’ will kick you out. Those that have never been to Harrods are in for a real treat. The interior is pretty amazing and each part of the store has been fitted out with sumptuous decorations which are worth a visit if nothing else.

Budget London Hotels Are Not Impossible To Find If You Know Where To Look

February 23, 2010

Travel abroad does not have to be expensive if you know the right places to stay and how to save money. There are numerous budget London hotels that can save you money and still provide quality accommodations. The list of options below should help you locate something that you like.

When traveling anywhere it is always a good idea to get a good feel for the are you intend to visit ahead of time and determine where you intend to spend most of your time. You will also want to consider how close to the attractions you want to be. In the case of traveling to London it is a good idea to decide what neighborhood you want to stay I and then try to find budget London hotels in that area.

Keep in mind that some areas will be more residential than others and that you may be able to save money by staying a little out of the high cost district. One area that is predominantly residential is the neighborhood of Bayswater. This neighborhood is just north of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, which makes it a great location.

Baywatch has numerous inexpensive accommodations well within a reasonable distance to the park and gardens. Not only is this close to the main attractions of the city but it is also a quiet area, which makes it a great destination when travailing with children.

One such place is the Central Park Hotel; this hotel is located on Queensborough terrace, which is a strip just north of Kensington square. While this hotel is not a historic building it does offer reasonable rates on its rooms, which are all en-suite. This place has over 25 rooms and tends to be offering reasonable rates even during the busiest travel times.

If you are looking to stay in Victorian era hotel and still save money then you should consider the Queen’s park Hotel. This facility is housed in a large Victorian era structure and is also located in Queensburough terrace. This place will provide you a Victorian experience at a budget, but it is not going to provide you luxury or grandeur. However if you are more interested in a good night’s sleep than if there is a fancy chandelier in the lobby then you should feel right at home here.

Kensington is perhaps one of the most popular areas of the city it is also one of the most affluent areas. Although this is the home to Kensington palace the former home of Princess Diana it is not impossible to find an affordable hotel nearby.
